Resin vs FDM Pricing for 3D Print Sellers
A process-cost worksheet for resin and FDM products, including labor, yield, post-processing, safety controls, packaging, and customer claims.

Price resin and FDM as different production systems. Resin cost is heavily affected by washing, curing, support removal, solvent/resin handling, and hands-on finishing. FDM cost is often driven by machine occupancy, material, supports, and per-part cleanup. Neither process has a universally lower cost.
Choose the process from the product requirement, then calculate its complete cost per accepted unit.
Use the same cost skeleton for both

Avoid using resin bottle price divided by model volume as the quote. It omits most of the workflow.

Use hands-on minutes for direct labor and treat machine/wash/cure occupancy according to your capacity model. Do not charge an operator's full hourly rate for unattended cure time and then omit the equipment occupancy entirely; define both consistently.
Price accepted output, not starts
Suppose an eight-part resin build costs $44 across material, equipment, labor, consumables, and allocated safety/waste controls. If seven parts pass inspection, the production cost is $6.29 per accepted unit, not $5.50.
If an FDM plate costs $31 and yields five accepted parts, its cost is $6.20 each. In that example the processes are nearly equal before packaging, even though their cost composition is different.
Use design-specific yield. Tiny resin miniatures and large functional enclosures should not share a failure assumption.
Treat post-processing as part of the product
Formlabs' official SLA post-processing guidance explains that SLA parts require washing and that some functional resins require post-curing for optimal properties. Follow the exact resin manufacturer's wash, cure, and safety data; settings are material-specific.
For pricing, define the delivered finish:
- supports removed only;
- supports removed and contact points smoothed;
- fully sanded cosmetic surface;
- primed/painted finish;
- assembled part;
- documented cure or dimensional inspection.
“Finished resin print” means nothing until these steps are specified.
Include safety and waste controls
Liquid photopolymer resins and wash solvents require a controlled workflow. NIOSH's safe vat-photopolymerization guidance addresses skin exposure, ventilation, wash solvents, curing, sanding dust, PPE, and spill cleanup. Use the current SDS for each material and solvent. Price the engineering controls, PPE, training, cleanup, and lawful waste handling required by your operation. This article is not a facility safety assessment.
Match the process to the buyer's requirement

These are starting tendencies, not guarantees. Test the actual design in candidate processes.
Make listing claims process-specific
For FDM, show layer texture, seam, support-contact areas, and orientation-sensitive features. For resin, show support-contact finishing, brittleness/handling limits supported by the chosen resin data, and any color/UV aging caveats.
Do not call a generic resin “food safe,” “skin safe,” “biocompatible,” or suitable for children because another material from the same vendor has a certification. Use the exact material, process, cure, and application evidence required for the claim.
Price packaging from failure modes
FDM parts may need protection from bending, abrasion, or thin-feature impact. Resin parts often need careful immobilization around fine or brittle details. Run a complete pack test and record:
- orientation in the carton;
- protective material and quantity;
- clearance from box walls;
- whether small parts are separately bagged/labeled;
- packed weight/dimensions;
- result of the chosen shipment simulation or trial.
The process with the lower production cost can become more expensive after packaging.

FAQ
Is resin always more expensive than FDM?
No. Compare complete cost per accepted unit. Geometry, packing density, finish, yield, labor, and equipment can reverse the result.
Should curing time be billed as labor?
Separate hands-on labor from equipment occupancy. Price both consistently according to how they constrain your operation.
Can I sell the same design in resin and FDM under one SKU?
Use different SKUs. The material, finish, handling, cost, and production path are different and should not depend on an operator interpreting a note.
